Regional development policy aims at reducing development disparities existing in the EU by strengthening regional competitive capacity. Most of the funds for regional development are intended for less developed areas. Absorption of funds in Romania, as in the EU, takes place at the level of NUTS 2 regions, which in Romania are not administrative units, but a juxtaposition of counties. We make a comparison of the contracting and absorption level of EU funds in Romania and in other countries in Central and Eastern Europe, to note that Romania has a low rate of contracting and very low rate of absorption. We also identify the trends and the context in Romania regarding the EU funds absorption process.
