The present formatting rules are part of the editorial contract and will be binding for all LUMEN Publishing House programs, except for the LUMEN Pre-approved Book Program, where certain rules can be negotiated by mutual agreement between the author and the Publishing House.
We do not recommend any author to alter these guidelines, for the sake of creating and maintaining the editorial visual identity.
The formatting style of any publication published by LUMEN Publishing House is based on predetermined templates, available on the website. The final form of the volume is negotiated between the author and the editorial staff of LUMEN Publishing House. In this respect, the author may suggest special elements of text formatting, the Publishing House reserving the right not to accept formats that deviate significantly from the editorial standards. The special requirements are mentioned together with the submission of the final version of the manuscript and, once accepted by both parties, no further changes can be made. LUMEN Publishing House aims to maintain an editorial identity, to which the design and formatting elements contribute. Acceptance of the editorial contract by the author automatically implies the acceptance of the predetermined formats of the Publishing House.
The author can request a special format only in case of full payment of the editorial expenses in the LUMEN Pre-approved Book Program. In this case, the option for a particular format is considered an additional service and is charged as such.
LUMEN Publishing House reserves the right to introduce visual elements to identify the publication, the Publishing House or, possibly, the editorial program under which the volume appears, on page 2 and on the last page of the volume.
The standard formats of LUMEN Publishing House are:
- B5 Jis Format (~ 18.2 cm wide by 25.7 cm high);
- A5 Format (~ 14.5 cm wide by 20.5 cm high);
- Pocket size (~ 11 cm wide by 18 cm high).
- Other formats are accepted only in the LUMEN Pre-approved Book Program.
New chapters always start on the odd page. If the page before the beginning of a new chapter does not contain text, it will be left blank. See the international model proposed by Sage Publications (one of the most esteemed scientific publishers in the world).
The font used in the text-formatting is generally GARAMOND, which can be replaced by GEORGIA. Times New Roman, Arial or other fonts that are significantly distant from the characteristics of the first two are not accepted. If the Publisher or the author chooses to replace the Garamond font with Georgia, the other party is consulted. The fonts used are Normal or Italic. The normal is defined by the following characteristics: font size 12, alignment Justified, spacing Normal, indentation First Line 1, 27 cm. For scientific books, Underline or Bold and Bold Italic are not allowed in the text. This decision does not wish to undermine the author’s rights to express his idea as well as his creativity, but to align LUMEN Publishing House with international editorial standards and thus increase the visibility of our publications in the national and international environment.
The chapter title is automatically formatted as Heading 1, with the following features: Garamond, font size between 14 and 16 (depending on each text separately), Centered, Bold (not Bold Italic or Underlined). It can be ALL CAPS (capital letters only) or SENTENCE CASE (only the first letter in the title with a capital letter, except own names).
Subtitles (subchapter titles) are automatically formatted as Heading 2, with the following features: Garamond, font size between 12 and 14 (depending on each text separately), Centered or Aligned Left, depending on each volume, Bold (not Bold Italic or Bold Underlined), SENTENCE CASE (only the first letter of the subtitle with capital letter, except own names).
Sub-subtitles (semicolon headings) are automatically formatted as Heading 3, with the following characteristics: Garamond, font size between 12 and 13 (depending on each text separately), Centered or Aligned Left, depending on each volume, Bold (not Bold Italic or Underlined), SENTENCE CASE (only the first letter of the subtitle with a capital letter, except own names).
Other titles will be operated until Heading 5, but will not be included in the Table of Contents. In order for our editors to understand exactly the authors’ intention to set titles, subtitles, etc., authors are asked to define them in the final version as Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3 style etc., or at least clearly differentiate them by size, otherwise the author understands that it is impossible to have dedicated editors for all the topics of the books published by LUMEN Publishing House and, as such, errors may occur, which will be corrected at the final correction made upon the author’s suggestion.
If the work contains footnotes, they will be formatted with Garamond, size 10, Justified alignment, without indentation. The book titles, if they exist in the footnotes, are formatted with Italic and not Bold. Generally, the consecrated citation styles will be respected, depending on the author’s choice and the specifics of the collection. LUMEN publishing house strongly recommends the use of the citation style of the Romanian Academy for the volumes to be published in the Law Book Series, and for the other series, the authors will choose between the citation style of the Romanian Academy and the APA Style VI citation style. The scientific journals will have the bibliography formatted in the APA Style VI citation style. The proceeding volumes will have the bibliography formed in the citation style APA Style VI or Vancouver.
The header each page will be written with Garamond, size 12, centered, underlined from one edge to the other of the text mirror. The odd page will contain the name of the volume, as long as it fits on one line, followed by “… ..” if the volume’s name is longer. The name of the author, in the form “First name, LAST NAME”, Normal or Italic (bent to the right) will appear on the even page. The author’s name is written in capital letters.
The bibliography at the end of the paper (references) will be formatted with Garamond, size 12, Hanging (the first line is indentation, the following lines to the same item in the bibliography starting with a displacement of 1 cm to the right), arranged alphabetically.
The tables are placed either on the normal page (portrait orientation) or on a landscape page (rotated), depending on the specificity of each table, to ensure maximum visibility of the content. As long as possible, keep the formatting of all tables in a volume constant, preferring to continue on the next page, including breaking the table, rather than writing with excessively small fonts.
The “quotation” style will be introduced when there are a number of paragraphs that want to be highlighted and it will be done as follows: Garamond, size 12, Italic, Indentation left and right 1 cm, without first line indentation. The quotation marks and Italic are not accepted simultaneously. Consistency in the text is required. You will use either quotation marks or Italic to mark quotes. The publishing house recommends, where possible, the use of paraphrasing instead of the effective quotation of a large text. For citations larger than 3 rows it is recommended to mark the citation with the aforementioned style.
There are up to two ways of Bullet (graphic labeling of the lists) accepted: “-” and “•”.
The pause between letters, such as S T U D Y, in any of the aforementioned styles, is not accepted.
The covers will be designed based on a predetermined format, published on the LUMEN Publishing House website and which constitutes a visual identification element of the Publishing House, and can only be changed in the case of the LUMEN Pre-approved Book Program. We do not recommend authors to request other cover formats.
We recommend the use of the citation styles indicated above, with the mention of using a single style and keeping the specific of the style chosen throughout the paper.
LUMEN Publishing House can change the formatting rules according to the specificity of the book and the news in the editorial field, the elements of formatting and visual identity being permanently updated on the LUMEN Publishing House website.
For books with a literary and non-scientific character, the formatting rules set out above do not strictly apply, being adapted to the specific of the volume, especially for poetry.
LUMEN Publishing House starts from the assumption that the author sends for publication the final version of the manuscript that he wants to be published and, as such, he performs in advance the proofreading and copyediting of text, images, tables, etc.
Proofreading is an optional, additional service, which is charged separately and is required by contract or additional document to the contract. The editor responsible for the book, if encountering spelling or proofing errors in the manuscript, asks the author to make the revisions, in which case the author can ask the Publishing House to perform proofreading, as an additional service. THE PUBLISHING HOUSE DOES NOT ACCEPT MANUSCRIPTS THAT ARE NOT IN DIGITAL FORMAT (written by hand).
The final version for publication contains all the elements that the author wishes to include in the volume (tables, images, etc.) and is the final version from the author’s point of view, so the email containing this version must be sent with the FINAL VERSION specification.
After completing the formatting process and any corrections/revisions requested by the author, the author receives a layout of the book in PDF format, on which he must give his agreement, with the specification GOOD FOR PRINTING. Before sending the printout, the author can request small text corrections, which does not affect the overall formatting. If the requested changes strongly alter the final layout, the author accepts that additional charges will be involved.
The author makes sure that, when submitting the the final version of the volume, he owns all the copyrights on the tables, figures, images, etc., including the content included in the volume, and expressly declares that he assumes full responsibility for owning the copyright for the entire content proposed for publication.
The editor responsible for the book will verify, including the volumes / articles accepted following a peer review, by survey, the coincidence of the bibliography with the sources cited in the text. If the responsible editor identifies sources cited in the text and their lack in the bibliography, respectively sources existing in the bibliography but not mentioned in the text, the responsible book editor sends back the text to the author for proofreading. The author can request LUMEN Publishing House for the additional service of correlating the bibliography with the text, but LUMEN Publishing House does not assume the responsibility that it can correctly identify all the bibliographic sources used by the author.
The books enter the formatting, proofreading, respectively printing stages in the order of their arrival in the Editorial Office, the execution times differing depending on the difficulty of the tasks to be executed and the existence of additional services. The execution time is at least 30 days and maximum 120 days until a version is sent to the author to agree on the layout as being GOOD FOR PRINTING. Depending on the changes requested, editorial time may be extended. The 120-day period starts from the moment of sending the final version and, if there is a payment obligation from the author, it starts from the date of sending the proof of payment obligation, depending on which of the two is the last one.
The period from the moment of the request sent to the authors to make corrections, revisions, etc. and, respectively, the period of time before the final manuscript is sent back to LUMEN Publishing House, until the author’s approval for GOOD FOR PRINTING, is not included in the editorial timeframe. Authors who want a quick publication, outside the aforementioned times, can request this service, with a 50% increase in editorial and publication costs.
After the final suggestions of revisions have been sent, and the editor has performed them, the volume is automatically accepted as GOOD FOR PRINTING and no further changes can be requested. The inaccuracy of the author in expressing his correction requests is NOT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PUBLISHING HOUSE, THE PUBLISHING HOUSE ONLY BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SITUATIONS IN WHICH THE PRINTED VOLUME DOES NOT CONTAIN THE LAST CORRECTIONS REQUESTED. If the author identifies necessary corrections other than those sent between the first version of the layout and those sent in the first phase, he/she assumes the publication date offset.
