The gothic novel tells the uneasy story of a usurpation: either of the genealogical line, of social identity and class privileges, or of gender positions, having authority and creativity. The title of this book, which defies and at the same time confiscates a gothic cliché, attempts to encapsulate the essence of the gothic, parodying the tendency of literary criticism to take advantage of a “minor” literary species that abounds, rightly, in the bizarre and inconsistent. In fact, the species in question is also very easy to usurp, even mutilate, because it does not cause any fear, nor compassion. The title also refers to the desire, again cut out of the Gothic, to transform the critical exercise, it is tender and predictable, in a fireworks as elaborate and elucubating as the literary text it investigates.
