The literature on the social construction of the practice of probation – with reference to the British system and its generalization – argues the need to analyze the historical perspective when implementing new standards regarding the practice of probation, as the probation systems are dependent on the historical context in which they have developed and are developing. The comparison between the American and the British systems shows that the two have evolved differently depending on the meaning of the term “offender”. The historical but also the theoretical origin of the different probation services impacted the practice – what is meant to be a scientific one – the professional ideology, and the unifomization of the probation services offer.
