The turnout to voting has fallen in twenty years from eighty-five percent to less than thirty percent. Confidence in the institutions of democracy has deteriorated even more. Populism, in its manipulative and dangerous sense, has become a contagious disease; from a speech campaign of the Liberal parties that wanted to be victorious in a country of poor people, it turned into the very content of politics. Public venues for real and serious debate are lacking. Parliament itself has lost its original essence, a place where the divergent interests of citizens are confronted through dialogue.
