Following the evolution of the role of elites in society in relation to the functioning of democracy, the author distinguishes two perspectives in elite research: monistic perspective, preferred by representatives of classical and radical elitism and pluralist perspective, promoted by pluralist and democratic elitism. The report of the elite theorists to democracy is surprised as a process evolving from the pessimistic, critical attitude of the classical elitists, skeptics regarding the concrete possibilities of applying the theory of democracy, to the optimistic, constructive attitude of the pluralist elitists, who conceive of democracy as a whole of values, principles and procedures necessary to regulate the competition of political elites for power.
The author opts for democratic elitism as a theoretical-ideological approach applicable in resolving controversies between the theory of elites and the theory of democracy, portraying the political elites as “guardians of democracy”. (Professor Emeritus Anton CARPINSCHI)
