Description:
A society maintains its stability through a combination of force and hegemony, in which certain groups and institutions exercise their power authoritatively to maintain social barriers (police, army, paramilitary groups), while other institutions (church, school, media) ) serve to induce an attitude of acceptance of the dominant order by establishing the hegemony or ideological domination of a certain type of social order (liberal capitalism, communism, fascism, etc.). The dominant ideology becomes invisible because it is transformed into a matter of “common sense”, thus appearing as a natural state of affairs, apolitical, fully accepted. For the present situation, we are mainly interested in the mass media, more precisely their role in inducing mass consensus with the help of the representations they produce and promote. (The Author)
