The relatively consistent scientific study of the Csango population began in the nineteenth century, but the results did not lead to a consensus, but, on the contrary, created controversy. Even today we are witnessing a strong journalistic, political and even diplomatic media coverage of the issue of Moldovan Catholics (“Csango”), a sign that the issue of their identity remains open. The perspective that interests us here is a sociological one. The main objective of our project is to establish the ethnic identity of the populations of the Catholic faith in the villages of the central area of Moldova and the way in which these communities construct their ethnic and cultural identity.
