The last twenty years have been marked by profound social, economic and political changes in post-communist societies. These transformations aimed at both institutional and cultural-value change. Everywhere in Central and Eastern Europe we went from communist totalitarianism to pluralist democracy, from the planned to the market economy. These changes have been in tandem with the changing attitudes and social values, the way people perceive and relate to society as a whole, as well as to its different institutions and components. This volume addresses precisely this last facet of the transformations produced in post-communist societies in the last two decades – cultural change – value. The paper focuses on three different dimensions of changing social values over the past two decades: support for a democratic political regime, religious belief, and gender equality. Each of these themes is approached from both a longitudinal and a transversal comparative perspective. (The author)
