Observers of social life recognize that deviance has become a widespread and important phenomenon with consequences, and its forms of expression are particularly numerous and varied in intensity. Gabriel Mugny states two approaches to deviance: one functionalist and one interactionist. The functionalist perspective views social systems as optimal, ideal and focuses on reproducing and maintaining social relationships.
